Many people do not need a reason to go fishing. The joy of fishing is usually enough. For those of you that occasionally fish, or don’t understand why others devote most of their lives to it, here are some of the better reasons to get out and fish a little bit more this year.
1) Enjoy Mother Nature. Day to day life can be frustrating and stressful, and sometimes we need to take a step back, disconnect from technology and the worries of everyday life. The worst day fishing still beats the best day of work.
2) Focus on the important things. Life. Step away from the computer grab your rod and tell yourself it could be worse…you could be stuck at work.
3) Bond with your children. There is nothing more rewarding that seeing their eyes light up after that first fish. Bring a camera…you’re going to want to capture these moments.
4) Catch a trophy. This takes dedication and patience. Some people fish their entire lives without catching “a wall hanger,” which is a goal of many fishermen.
5) Practice. The more you fish the better you are. If you only go on one fishing trip a year, and don’t catch anything, you don’t have that feeling of self accomplishment. Fish more, catch more.
6) Get out of the house or office. Not everyone has the ideal wife, the ideal family or the perfect job. Fishing lets you escape ‘reality’ momentarily, and have some quiet time.
7) Exercise. Most people think of fishing and exercise like oil and water. It depends on your idea of fishing. Wading through streams all day, covering miles of water is great, low impact, exercise. People that would scoff at the idea of walking a mile to work will gladly trek 5 miles back to their favorite stream and spend all day working up river.
8) Quality time with friends. If you have a friend you haven’t seen in a while, and it's overdue, invite him fishing. Fishing is better with friends. Plus, now you have a witness to that 50” Muskie you caught.
So there you go. The next time the wife wonders why you want to go fishing again, just tell her whichever one of these fits best.
